Footsteps

I heard footsteps in the hall this morning.
Was it you dear?
Was it my fear?
I placed a candle at the foot of the bed -
Lit, of course.
I turned my head
To see the shadows on the walls.
They jump some times in erratic behavior
Like subjects honoring a savior.
You know how they are.
I watched the light sneak under the crack of the door.
The light is very patient you know -
Very slow and steady -
Displaying uncanny stealth.
But my eyes are sharp. Keen.
I saw it breathe. Quiver.
I saw it shiver.
It sensed this of course, and in pause
It tried to fool me
But I am always ready.
To catch the intruders one must be steady
And watch.
The thieves are there
Awaiting entrance to the kingdom of thought
To steal my sanity.
I stand guard.
I heard someone in the hall this morning.
Are you sure it wasn't you?
